Dana Point
The harbor, the surf, and a few personal favorites.
When I talk about Dana Point, I want to get beyond the ocean-view photos. The harbor is a big part of the story, but so are the surf history and the places you start recommending to friends. And yes, I have an opinion about the pizza.
A harbor in its next chapter
Dana Point Harbor is undergoing a major, phased revitalization of its marina and waterfront commercial areas. It is an exciting change to follow, but it also means construction, shifting access routes, and changes to familiar businesses. This is a working project, rather than a finished waterfront makeover.
As of November 2026, the harbor’s published updates describe Commercial Core work and continuing marina improvements. Public access is being maintained through the work, but check the official construction updates for the latest parking, walking routes, and business information before heading down. If you’re considering a home nearby, we’ll talk about the experience today as well as the plans ahead.
My pizza pick—and my poke pick
Truly Pizza on Del Prado has earned serious recognition: No. 4 in the United States in the 50 Top Pizza USA 2026 guide. My personal favorite, though, is aPizza Doho in the Lantern District, known for its New Haven-style pizza. Awards are one thing; the place you personally want to go back to is another.
For a poke bowl, my pick is Kawamata Seafood. To me, it’s the best. Those are the kinds of recommendations I want to share when we’re exploring a neighborhood—not just where the houses are, but where you might want to stop for lunch.
Why you hear “Killer Dana”
Killer Dana was the name of a powerful, right-breaking wave that wrapped around the point. That historic surf break disappeared when the harbor breakwater was built. The name lives on as part of the city’s surfing identity; it isn’t the name of a wave you can still surf inside today’s harbor.
Dana Point’s place in surfing runs deeper than a nickname. Surfboard making, surf publications, and breaks such as Doheny helped shape its culture. It’s a useful bit of history to know when you’re getting a feel for the town.
Let’s find your version of coastal living
Being near the harbor, being near the beach, and having the right home for everyday life are different priorities. We’ll talk about which matters most to you, then look at the actual streets, routes, outdoor space, and property details together.
